I reproduce an article originally written by "rajpriya" an author who wrote this story on "Chennaiforums" which does not exist any more.
The name of the original article was "A Disc that changed the world"
I am trying to keep away from politics and other matters that do not enhance our lives.
We are forced to keep our heads above water with the few hundred politicians dragging us deeper and deeper into the deep blue sea. While we reach both our hands stretched towards the sky and yell for help, they tell us the economic situation is a world problem.
Before we drown we will think of the things that changed our lives. So today, I thought I would tell you of some one who predicted the invention of the CD.
Over a hundred years ago H G Wells in “The time Machine” described that a set of golden discs when spun as directed, assailed the mind with sound, images and pictures that were unimaginable. Wells was a genius and visionary who, fore saw that every disc could hold the history of a Race.
Many of us cannot recall the launch of the CD today. The conquest of the music market by the digital technology took less than six years. Technology’s’ migration from conventional to digital continues at a startling pace.
Those of us who sat in front of old Olivetti typewriters to write letters to be sent by snail mail and airmail have vague memories of this now.
We are sitting today in front of computers to send email that can reach any part of this earth in minutes.
We all are aware of the potential, digital data provides us. The flexibility of its storage, accessibility and reusability are many comforts that have made our life so much easier than ever.
Production methods of many manufacturing process today, needs a combination of experience, sophisticated knowledge to profit by them. The failure of many manufacturing plants to grow can be attributed to its ignorance of new technologies.
All products manufactured target a solid consumer market place. To set new standards and to satisfy the changing needs of the consumer, old concepts need replacement with new.
After all it is the consumer who gives meaning to a product and not it’s designer.
Having been in a profession that had access to many manufacturing processes conventional and the radical wholesale transition to digital technology the world seems to have gone a long, long way. To end this view of technology here is a story that innovation always results in profit.
John Smith was a second rate author. Only three copies of his novel “The Vampire of Alcatraz Prison” was sold in the first six months. But one day he had a brilliant idea. He placed the following ad in several newspapers.
“Millionaire, 65, good looking, wishes to marry a girl like the heroine in the novel “The Vampire of Alcatraz Prison”. Written by John Smith. All his books were sold within a week.
